An important component of the 4-H educational philosophy, learn by doing, is to have ample opportunity for personal reflection. A member’s record book will assist them in learning to set goals, keep records, and evaluate what they did or did not accomplish. I will reapply to serve in this capacity when the program resumes. When I first started in 4-H, I was excited at the idea of making new friends, but I was also more introverted around new groups and somewhat intimidated by the thought of meeting new people. My new club visited an assisted living facility every month to help entertain the residents. I was very hesitant to attend and was uncomfortable interacting how to identify entry and exit points with the residents.

Currently, Chandler is a 4-H extension agent in Central Florida with the University of Florida. Any youth may become a member of 4-H when he or she has reached 9 years of age, or 8 years of age and has entered the third grade. There is a program called Clover Kids that younger youth can participate in that allows them to experience 4-H through non-competitive, small project activities.

The second step to getting involved in 4-H is finding a club in your county that fits your location OR what you want to do. A 4-H Club is an organized group of at least five youth from three different families who meet regularly with adult volunteers or staff for a long-term, progressive series of educational experiences. Usually, clubs’ contact info is located on your county 4-H website. Contact the club to learn about its meeting schedule and its eligibility requirements.

Before long, I was shaking their hands, talking to them, playing instruments for them, and even leading them in songs and games! The monthly visits quickly became one of my favorite activities, and the experience paved the way for later volunteering at the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission when I became a teen. 4-H is a fun program where you get to “Learn by Doing.” With more than 10,000 established 4-H programs across North Carolina, you can be a part of 4-H wherever you live. Not only has 4-H given me leadership skills and the confidence to be more outgoing, but it has also shown me the importance of citizenship. I was accepted into the NC House Page Program last year but was unable to serve due to COVID-19.
The enrollment fee is $25 per member per year if you enroll by October 31. Enrollment is open to youth ages 5 to 18 as of January 1st saas development in 2022 of the current year. New 4-H members, volunteers and clubs are always welcome to join. Support military youth with positive youth development through 4-H programs. Starting the 4-H Year: Where to Begin?
Each year on August 15th all membership in Texas 4-H goes to inactive and all youth and adult volunteers must re-enroll. It is important that the county extension office maintain accurate records for each member. Beginning September 1, you must log in to 4-H Connect to update your information. You must complete re-enrollment in order to register for any upcoming events. Holding offices from Reporter to President within my club and serving as the County 4-H Council Photographer and Secretary, I have expanded my leadership roles and will run for district office this year.
